“They go back where they left off, with wavy, atmospheric and grainy melodies”

Doves
The universal want
Heavenly/Virgin-EMI, 2020

Text: XAVIER VALIÑO.

At the dizzying pace that everything moves, it might seem that after eleven years no one remembers Doves. The Manchester group, which started out as a Sub Sub, dedicated to dance, and then transmuted into one of the best British rock bands of the turn of the century (four records in nine years), seemed to have fizzled out. Its leader, Jimi Goodwin, released his debut A decision in 2014 and Jez and Andy Williams formed Black Rivers.

After reuniting for several concerts last year, they return where they left off, with wavy, atmospheric and grainy melodies, which advance with the contribution of Tony Allen or the Afrobeat of “Mother silver lake”. Freed from expectations and pressures, their experience contributes to the songs expressing both despair and hope in resounding house-brand moments such as “Prisoners”.
