– Today, for the first time in over half a century, the United States returned to the Moon, said NASA Director Bill Nelson. The Odysseus lander of the private American company Intuitive Machine landed on the Moon. It has already sent the first signal to Earth.
“We can confirm without a doubt that our equipment is on the lunar surface and that we are transmitting a signal to Earth,” said the manager of Intuitive Machines in Houston.
With the landing, Intuitive Machines became the first private company to successfully place a spacecraft on the lunar surface.
It is also a great day for NASA and the American aerospace community, which has not carried out a successful mission to the Moon for over half a century – emphasizes the BBC.
“Your shipment has been successfully delivered… to the Moon! The Intuitive Machines uncrewed lunar lander successfully landed at 6:23 p.m. ET, carrying six NASA instruments to the lunar surface. These instruments will help us pave the way for future Artemis missions – manned and robotic!” – NASA announced on its profile on the X platform.
– Today, for the first time in over half a century, the United States returned to the Moon – said NASA Director Bill Nelson during the webcast of the event.
According to Intuitive Machines, Odysseus made the first, rather weak, connection from the Moon at 0:23 CET (Central European Time), which strengthened after about ten minutes.
Intuitive Machines is a company that built a lunar lander and, at the request of the American space agency NASA, took its equipment there: including: a stereoscopic camera to observe the dust plume raised by the landing, and a radio receiver to measure the effect of charged particles on radio signals on the lunar surface. The collected data will help NASA land astronauts on the Moon, which is expected to take place in 2026.
