The United States says 25% of residents on the US-Mexico border are at risk

Washington, Oct. 18 (EFE) .- One in four people living in counties along the US border with Mexico, from California to Texas, do so in “high-risk” conditions, according to a report published by the US Census. Bureau this Tuesday.

Risk factors used by the federal agency to measure conditions in these regions include household income and the poverty line, housing overcrowding, and communication barriers due to homelessness. English.

The highest risk rates, according to the study, are found in the border counties of Texas and New Mexico compared to California and Arizona.

“The national debate about areas along the US border with Mexico often treats these communities as if they were homogeneous,” notes the report.

“But each area is unique with different strengths, weaknesses and variability in socioeconomic profiles that can help personalize health services and other policy decisions,” he added.

Other risk factors used in the study include homeless people with full-time, year-round employment, no health insurance, families without a vehicle, and no broadband Internet access.

The estimated percentage of border county residents facing high risk was 34.7% in Texas, compared to 24% in Arizona and 18.3% in California.

The Census Bureau further stated that “the difference between Texas and New Mexico is not statistically significant”.

The high-risk rate for people living in Texas border counties was 1.4 times that of Arizona and 1.9 times that of California.
