But it worked, ”said Pompeo.

According to him, the current goal of Washington is to achieve the resignation of the incumbent president of Venezuela Maduro, after which to ensure the holding of free elections there. Pompeo also mentioned a meeting with local opposition leader and parliament speaker Juan Guiado, who spoke about the terrorist threat to his country.

On April 30, 2019, Guaido called on the military and the people of the country to overthrow the president. He stated that the army sided with him and called what was happening “the final phase of Operation Freedom.” The next day, Maduro declared his victory over the opposition forces.

The situation in Venezuela worsened a year ago, when Guaido, against the backdrop of mass protests, declared himself interim president. Its legitimacy was recognized by the USA, a number of countries in Latin America and Europe. Russia supported the current president.
