Kirby was asked to comment yesterday on Shoigu, who said that Russian troops were close to completely taking over the Luhansk region.
The Pentagon speaker replied that he did not have a percentage estimate of the geography of hostilities. He believes that such indicators are not a useful unit of measurement when territories change hands every day.
“For example, two weeks ago, if you asked me about Kharkov, the Russians surrounded Kharkov. There was only a small corridor southeast of the city through which the Ukrainians could continue to supply themselves. And now they have literally pushed the Russians far from Kharkov all the way to border with Russia,” Kirby added.
According to him, the Russian army is still far behind schedule in achieving goals in the Donbass. Kirby noted that the progress of the Russians in the region is gradual, slow and uneven, while the Ukrainians continue to resist.
“So, this is a long answer to a simple question. I don’t have for you (data on the captured. – Order.) share of the land. And again, I’m not sure we would consider that a useful indicator, given how dynamic the fighting in the east is,” he concluded.
