The United States on Saturday proposed a draft resolution in the UN Security Council that says Israel has the right to defend itself and demands that Iran stop exporting weapons to “militias and terrorist groups that threaten peace and security throughout the region.”
The draft resolution, seen by Reuters, calls for the protection of civilians, including those trying to survive, and notes that states must abide by international law when responding to “terrorist attacks.” It also urges the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip on a “continuous, adequate and unhindered basis.” “.
The American draft resolution does not call for any cessation or truce in the fighting, and calls on all countries to prevent “the expansion of violence in Gaza or its spread to other areas in the region by calling on Hezbollah and other armed groups to immediately stop all attacks.”
The US draft resolution calls on Iran to stop exporting weapons to groups that threaten peace and security throughout the region, including Hamas.
It was not immediately clear if or when the United States intends to put the draft resolution to a vote.
Approval of the resolution requires the support of at least nine votes and Russia, China, France or Britain not to use their veto power.
This move by the United States comes after it vetoed a text drafted by Brazil on Wednesday that called for a humanitarian truce in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, to allow aid to enter Gaza.
