The United States prepares for the time change

Americans will set their clocks again at the next time, which marks the end of daylight saving time.

Millions of people in the United States will have to change their clocks because of the end of daylight saving time.

This change marks the end of daylight savings time, a measure that aims to make better use of the hours of natural light. Each year, this change follows a fixed schedule: daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November.

Time setting details

In March 2024, daylight savings time began on the 10th. Now, in November, it will end, and residents of most states will have to change their clocks. This step aims to increase energy consumption, taking advantage of sunlight in the months with the most hours of sunshine.

However, not all states implement this change. There are some exceptions where residents do not change their clocks. Over the years, some states and territories have chosen not to follow daylight saving time for various reasons.

The change now corresponds to November 3, 2024. At 2:00 in the morning, the clocks must be turned back one hour, returning them to 1:00.

States that are exempt from time change

Territories that will not change their clocks include Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands. Additionally, much of Arizona is also exempt from this measure. Even though daylight saving time has been in place for decades, some places choose to stay on standard time all year round.

The origin of daylight saving time in the United States

The time change in the United States was formalized by the “Standard Time Act” of 1918, with the intention of saving natural light. Although the measurement has changed over time, daylight saving time is still part of the calendar in most of the country. Currently, its implementation is related to economic reasons, such as energy savings and transport efficiency.

Debate over permanent daylight saving time

In recent years, some states have shown interest in keeping daylight saving time permanent. As of 2022, at least 19 states have passed laws that would allow daylight saving time to be enforced year-round, if Congress approves it. These include Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Oregon and Utah, among others.

Meanwhile, in California, although this measure was voted in favor in 2018, the state legislature has not yet taken definitive steps to make daylight saving time permanent. Despite these efforts, for now, time change is still a reality that many Americans must face every year.
