The United States is on the brink of a world war it can lose. In two of the three most strategically important regions in the world, there are serious conflicts that require the attention of the United States, writes The Foreign Policy.
If China decides to launch an attack on Taiwan, the situation could quickly escalate into a three-front global war, involving the United States directly or indirectly. Time is running out, and while there are opportunities to improve the US position, they all require serious effort and inevitable trade-offs. It is time to act with real urgency to mobilize the United States, its defenses and its allies for what may become the global crisis of our time, writes A. As Russia prepares for a long war in Ukraine and as a new front opens in the Middle East, China will be increasingly tempted to take advantage of the situation and invade Taiwan. Beijing has already begun to test Washington’s response in East Asia, knowing full well that the US would find it very difficult to deal with a third geopolitical crisis.
If war breaks out in the region, America will find it has more hurdles to overcome. Some of them are geographical: the US military today is not prepared to fight two major rival powers at the same time. In the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan, the Americans would find it very difficult to repel the attack while continuing to support Ukraine and Israel.
The reason is not that the US is in decline, but because, unlike the US military, which must be strong on three fronts, each of its adversaries, China, Russia, and Iran, must be strong only in its own region and achieve your goals. The worst-case scenario is an intense war waged on at least three distant fronts by the heavily overstretched US military, supported by ill-equipped allies unable to defend themselves against the resource-rich industrial forces, determination and ferocity required to maintaining a long-running conflict. To fight such a war, Americans and their allies will need to demonstrate national unity, resource mobilization and a spirit of self-sacrifice not seen in generations.
