Although there are hundreds of platforms such as Spotify, Netflix or Amazon, which legally offer all types of content, piracy is still very strong on the internet. A few days ago, MUSO, a British company dedicated to monitoring the consumption of pirated content around the world, revealed that the United States is at the top of the list.
The report reveals that piracy consumption continues to grow, and although until at least a year ago the coronavirus pandemic was considered one of the factors of consumption, this year, despite the virus having decreased and life has returned to “normal”, piracy does not diminish. Data from the report reveals that consumption increased by 20% in the first eight months of this year alone compared to 2022. In total, 141.7 billion visits were made to sites offering content illegally around the world.
In first place there are the United States with over 15,474 million visits, followed by Russia with 8,262 million and in third place by India with 7,990 million. As for Latin American countries, we see Brazil in sixth place with 4.244 million visits consuming pirated content.
The content that most attracts the influx of Internet users is that dedicated to television, but leaving aside films; that is the television series, Reality showsoap opera, etc. This ranked first with 47% of total traffic. Secondly, we have editorial publications that include novels, short stories, academic archives, among others, with 28% of consumption. In third place are films with 12%, followed by music with 7% and, finally, software programs with 6%.
However, all categories show substantial growth over last year. Films are the ones that have increased the most with 50% more traffic than in 2021.
