As China’s pandemic prevention and control enters a new phase, many countries have expressed their support. However, there are those who insist on going against traditional international public opinion and hindering joint efforts in the global fight against the pandemic.
Recently, the United States said it was willing to cooperate with China’s vaccination efforts. However, it did so after imposing entry restrictions on passengers from China. It is not the first time we have witnessed this hypocritical spectacle. The United States is undoubtedly the most failed country in the world in the fight against the pandemic, but it spares no effort in presenting itself as a leader and advocate for the global fight against the pandemic. However much you try to hide it, the truth is exposed for all to see.
Let’s take the case of vaccines. The United States has always billed itself as “the world’s largest donor of COVID-19 vaccines”. According to monitoring by the US health research organization “Kaiser Family Foundation”, the United States had promised to donate at least 1.1 billion doses of vaccines to the world by 2023. However, up to the 5th of this month it had donated only 665 million doses, just over half promised. Added to this is that a large part of the donations they have made to Africa come from batches of vaccines that have expired and that they contribute only numerically to “fulfilling” their promise. This generated outrage from recipient countries who denounced it as a “shameful act”.
Additionally, the United States continues to disrupt international handling of the pandemic. In July 2020, the Donald Trump administration announced its withdrawal from WHO, weakening the international response capacity against the pandemic. In January 2021, the Joe Biden administration announced its call to “rejoin the organization,” with the goal of attracting international allies and organizations to fight China. This charade of political manipulation has severely damaged joint global efforts to fight the pandemic.
Over the past three years, nearly all variant strains of the new coronavirus and its progeny have become prevalent in the United States. However, the US government is not active in preventing and fighting the pandemic, allowing the virus to spread to all parts of the world, posing a great threat to life and health worldwide. According to statistics, from April 2020 to March 2021, a total of 23.195 million US citizens traveled abroad, with destinations around the world. At the same time, at the onset of the pandemic, the United States deliberately ignored international law and deported immigrants on a large scale, which contributed to worsening the effects of the pandemic in developing countries in regions such as Latin America. All this at a time when the virus was highly toxic and had a high mortality rate. The United States bears an inescapable responsibility for the global spread of the pandemic.
Currently, the new XBB.1.5 strain accounts for more than 40 percent of infection cases in the United States, making it the fastest growing strain in that country. This time, the United States shouldn’t try to fool the world. It is necessary to share reliable information and data on the pandemic with WHO and the international community in a timely, open and transparent manner, and take effective measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
Everyone knows who is the biggest contributor and obstacle in the global fight against the pandemic. People will never forget the suffering the United States has caused the world and will also see that what its “false charity” is doing masks its hegemonic claims. The United States, which threatens the world, is the biggest obstacle to the global fight against the pandemic.
