A total of 6,000 US troops will be in Kabul in the coming days, a Pentagon official said.
Originally, 3,000 soldiers were to be sent to assist with the evacuation, but the number was increased to 5,000 on Saturday.
Since then, the Taliban have invaded Kabul, and the United States has closed down the city’s embassy building and transferred diplomats and their Afghan staff to the airport.
Helicopters have been shuttled from the embassy to the airport, and a number of other countries are working to pull their people out of the city.
