US State Department adviser Derek Chollet said that the US administration plans to resume work on projects through the Arctic Council without the participation of Russia. According to him, the United States does not see opportunities for cooperation with Russia on the development of the Arctic because of the military operation in Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, we do not expect Russia to change its course of action anytime soon. Adapting to the new conditions imposed on us by Moscow, we are resuming Arctic Council projects that are not related to Russia,” said Derek Chollet at a briefing (quoted from TASS).
Mr. Chollet added that the United States is increasing cooperation with the Arctic states “from among like-minded people in the areas of security, science, natural resource development and ecology.” According to him, the United States is discussing with Norway and other countries the further actions of the council.
The Arctic Council includes Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the USA and Russia. On March 3, 2022, the council announced the suspension of its work due to the Russian military operation in Ukraine. On June 8, the countries announced that they would resume their work without the participation of Russia. The Russian embassy in the United States responded by saying that the development of the Far North is impossible without Russia’s participation.
