The United States is concerned about the influx of Middle Eastern and African migrants from Belarus to Lithuania, a senior US diplomat said in an interview with Lithuanian media published today, Reuters reported.
“We are watching this very carefully and with concern,” US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent told 15min.lt.
According to him, this “pressure tactic” resembles the migration flow from Russia to Finland and Norway in 2015.
The diplomat called on the regime in Minsk “to stop deliberately pushing migrants from other countries to the Lithuanian border,” BTA added.
The European border agency FRONTEX announced last night that in a few days it will provide “significant” assistance to Lithuania in connection with the migration pressure, the AP added.
This came after a video conference call between the agency’s executive director, Fabrice Legeri, and Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda.
FRONTEX is ready to send border police and equipment to guard the EU’s external border.
