The US Department of Justice has accused Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev of violating sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reported. According to the US agency, he financed Russians who promote separatism in Crimea.
Despite the ban on American citizens working or having business with Malofeev, he has appointed an American television producer to work for him in Russia and Greece and has tried to buy a television network in Bulgaria, the US Attorney General’s Office said. . Jack Hanick, a former employee of CNBC and Fox News, was arrested last month for working for Malofeev as a television producer, the agency said.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said today that authorities had also disrupted a global malicious computer network known as the “botnet”, which is controlled by Russian military intelligence, Reuters reported.
“The Justice Department will continue to use all its powers to hold Russian oligarchs and others who are trying to evade US sanctions accountable,” Garland told reporters in Washington.
Last month, the ministry set up a federal working group, KleptoCapture, to engage in sanctions against Russian oligarchs’ finances to increase pressure on Russia to end its invasion of Ukraine.
