(CNN) — The United States has counted more than 40 million cases of covid-19, with more than four million of them reported in the last four weeks alone, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
More than 649,000 Americans have died, according to JHU figures. About 99,000 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The 40 million number represents officially reported positive test results, and many experts believe that the actual number of infections is much higher.
