The United States detects a super virus against industrial infrastructure

The FBI and various other US agencies made public on April 13 the discovery of a virus dubbed Pipedream intended to infect many industrial equipment control systems, reports Wired. Described as a Swiss army knife, this malicious software has the particularity of being very versatile and could interfere in particular with Schneider Electric and Omron controllers used by industries as varied as electricity or refineries. According to the specialized cybersecurity company Dragos, which carried out its own report on this malware, it would be the most expensive industrial infrastructure attack tool ever developed.

Why this is critical. Malware used against industrial infrastructures such as Stuxnet to infect Iran’s nuclear facilities in 2010 or Industruoyer to cause a blackout in kyiv in 2016 are particularly feared because of their capacity for systemic harm. No one is commenting at this stage on the origin of Pipedream. However, it is possible that its revelation has a preventive effect. Schneider Electric says it is working with US authorities to prevent the threat of this super virus.
