The United States denounced Friday the sentencing in Burma of an American journalist to 11 years in prison and demanded his release.
“We strongly condemn the condemnation by the (Burmese) regime of Danny Fenster. Today’s verdict represents an unjust conviction of an innocent person“, said a spokesperson for the State Department.
“We are monitoring Danny’s situation closely and will continue to work on his immediate release.“, said this spokesperson.”Journalism is not a crime. Free and independent media are essential for building prosperous, resilient and free societies.“
Danny Fenster, 37, who was the editor of Frontier Myanmar news outlet, was arrested on May 24 at Yangon International Airport as he tried to leave the country.
