The President of the Council of US Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Millie, visited Riga today. During a visit to local media, he ruled out the idea of establishing a no-fly zone in Ukraine, because it would mean active participation in the fighting with Russian forces, AFP reported.
“If a no-fly zone is declared, some have to make sure it is observed. Then one has to go there and fight actively with the Russian air force,” the general told local media. “This is not something that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg or any other high-ranking political leader from a member of the Alliance would want to happen,” he said.
“Therefore, today I am not aware of any plan to establish such an area,” added General Millie.
Ukraine has been asking for such a zone for several days. Earlier in the day, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Russia would consider any country trying to impose such a zone on Ukraine a party to the conflict.
