The United States crosses the threshold of 100,000 deaths from Covid-19

The United States crossed the 100,000 mark on Wednesday from the new coronavirus, a record significantly higher than any other country in the world, according to Johns Hopkins University. The country now records nearly 1.7 million cases, according to the count of this university.

The 24-hour death toll also rose on Wednesday, with 1,401 additional deaths recorded, after three days in a row of less than 700 daily deaths. He had regularly crossed the bar of 2,000 daily deaths between early April and early May, then more exceeded this threshold for twenty days.

A third of the dead in New York State

As recalled by Washington Post, they are “for the most part elderly – in some states nearly two-thirds of the dead were 80 years or older.” They are disproportionately poor, black and Latino ”.

New York State alone represents almost a third of the deaths deplored since the start of the pandemic in the country, where the flags were half-masted for three days last weekend to pay tribute to the victims.

A projection of 123,000 dead by June 20

The first death from the virus in the United States was announced on February 26, although authorities have since confirmed that other people had in fact succumbed to the disease as early as mid-February. The 50,000 dead mark was crossed a little over a month ago, on April 24.

The death toll per capita is lower in the United States than in several European countries, including the United Kingdom (the second most bereaved country in absolute terms, with some 37,000 deaths), Belgium, Italy, Spain, France or even Sweden.

According to an average of several epidemiological models carried out by researchers at the University of Massachusetts, the number of deaths from Covid-19 is expected to be around 123,000 deaths in the country by June 20. The White House had counted on an estimate of between 100,000 and 240,000 dead.

A country in order of deconfinement

Experts, including immunologist Anthony Fauci, White House adviser on the Covid-19 crisis, agree that the official American record is in fact likely below reality.
