Washington, Jun 9 (EFE) .- The United States reached 33,411,461 confirmed cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and 598,762 deaths from the covid-19 disease this Wednesday, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
This balance at 20.00 local time (00.00 GMT on Thursday) was 370 more deaths than on Tuesday and 21,565 new infections.
California is the state hardest hit by the pandemic with 63,627 deaths, followed by New York (53,498), Texas (51,814), Florida (36,973), Pennsylvania (27,417), New Jersey (26,316) and Illinois (25,413).
Other states with a large number of deaths are Georgia (21,049), Michigan (20,667), Ohio (20,021), Massachusetts (17,917) or Arizona (17,716).
In terms of infections, California has 3,798,360, followed by Texas with 2,975,029, third is Florida with 2,332,867 and New York is fourth with 2,107,289.
The provisional death toll -598,762- far exceeds the lower limit of the initial estimates of the White House, which in the best of cases projected between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths due to the pandemic.
US President Joe Biden has predicted that a total of more than 600,000 people in the country will die from the virus.
As far as vaccines are concerned, some 172 million people (51.8% of the population) have received at least one dose, of which 140.9 million (42.5%) are already fully inoculated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Seattle, in the extreme northwest of the country, today became the first large American city with 70% of its population fully vaccinated, a percentage that experts say is necessary to achieve group immunity. EFE
