Washington, Feb 16 (EFE) .- The United States reached 27,748,253 confirmed cases of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus on Tuesday and 487,714 deaths from the covid-19 disease, according to the independent count from Johns Hopkins University.
This balance at 20.00 local time (01.00 GMT on Wednesday) is 1,428 more deaths than on Monday and 57,679 new infections.
California is now the worst-hit state by the pandemic with 47,220 deaths, followed by New York (46,141), Texas (41,346), Florida (29,154), Pennsylvania (23,100), New Jersey (22,497) and Illinois (22,199).
Other states with a large number of deaths are Ohio (16,174), Georgia (16,174), Michigan (16,149), Massachusetts (15,567) or Arizona (14,981).
In terms of infections, California has 3,494,794, followed by Texas with 2,569,839, third is Florida with 1,837,285, New York is fourth with 1,553,117 and Illinois is fifth with 1,164,922.
The provisional death toll – 487,714 – far exceeds the lower limit of the initial estimates of the White House, which projected in the best of cases between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths from the pandemic.
The new president of the United States, Joe Biden, has predicted that in February there will be more than half a million deaths and that in total more than 600,000 people will die.
