The United Nations decides to investigate the crackdown and killing of Iranian protesters

On the 24th the United Nations declared that it would investigate the repression and death of demonstrators in Iran.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) today decided to create a new commission to investigate the crackdown on anti-government protesters in Iran.

OHCHR representative Volker Turk said Iran was facing a “full-blown human rights crisis” following the Iranian crackdown on protesters in Geneva, Switzerland.

A Turkish representative said Iranian security forces responded with lethal force to peaceful and unarmed protesters.

More than 14,000 people have been arrested in connection with the protests, at least 21 have been sentenced to death and six have already been executed.

He called for an “independent, impartial and transparent investigation process” into human rights abuses in Iran.

The decision passed by vote, with 25 votes in favour, 6 against and 16 abstentions.

Earlier, Iran’s representative in Geneva said the West’s attack on Iran through the Human Rights Commission was “terrible and shameful”.
