The United Kingdom has been planning for some time to send boat people who enter the country illegally to Rwanda. That plan must have a deterrent effect on potential new migrants.
Supreme Court judgment
However, in early November, the British Supreme Court ruled that the initial deal between the UK and Rwanda breached the European human rights treaty. Rwanda would not be a country where all migrants flown in from the UK are safe, something that the human rights treaty does require.
Shortly after the Court’s ruling, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that he wanted to proceed with the Rwanda deal. He said then that it was important to make new agreements with Rwanda.
Emergency legislation
Sunak also wants to push emergency legislation through parliament in his own country that confirms that Rwanda is indeed a safe country, where migrants can be sent without danger.
The details of the new agreement to be signed have not yet been announced, according to the British website The Independent.
