More consequences of Brexit. From the April 2, 2025EU citizens visiting the UK will have to jump through a new bureaucratic hoop: apply for an electronic entry permit ‘ETA’ in advance —Electronic travel authorization—, as is already the case in the United States, Australia and Canada. In this way, it will be up to the UK Home Office to decide whether or not to allow the entry of European visitors.
Tourists who want to enter the United Kingdom will have to fill out a form with a series of questions similar to those that arise when applying for a visa. In fact, in practice the operation of the ‘ETA’ is similar to a visa, although officially citizens of the European Union do not require one to enter the neighbouring country as long as it is a tourist stay of less than six months. The process can be done quickly with a mobile applicationa process of only a few minutesalthough the term of The British authorities will respond within four days.
The British government, now led by Labour’s Keir Starmer, has stated in a statement on the occasion of the upcoming entry into force of the measure that The online application process will be “simple”” and recalled that people who need a visa to live, work or study in the United Kingdom can now obtain a similar one in electronic format.
Visitors to the European Union will be able to apply for the ‘ETA’, which has a Validity of two yearsstarting on 5 March 2025 and will be required at the border from 2 April. Citizens of certain non-EU countries, including several Latin American countries, will be able to apply for this immigration document online from 27 November, and will be required from 8 January next year. The price of the procedure will be 10 pounds (some 11,8 euros).
These electronic permits, which are already required by other English-speaking countries (the US, Canada and Australia), will be digitally linked to the passport and can be used for any trip, with a maximum stay of six months, during this two-year period, or until the passport expires (whichever comes first).
Furthermore, as a result of Brexit, from 1 October 2021 all citizens of the European Union who want to visit the United Kingdom will have to have a valid passportsince the DNI is no longer a valid document to enter the country. Citizens who wish to enter the United Kingdom as tourists can do so without having to apply for a visa for stays of up to a maximum of six months. On the other hand, all citizens who wish to enter the United Kingdom for other reasons, such as work or study, they do have to process the visa relevant in advance.
