Jakarta –
While other brands have made helmets that are all tapered with sharp corners, Arai still maintains a perfectly rounded design. Even though it seems out of date, it turns out there is a special reason behind it.
General Manager of Arai Indonesia, Arief RB, said that the completely rounded helmet model was actually a central Arai initiative, not because of special regulations from the Japanese government. Meanwhile, to add a sharp impression, manufacturers usually install additional spoilers with special materials.
“The design was Arai’s initiative, not a special regulation from Japan. So in essence, this is an Arai patent and was created by Arai,” said Arief RB when met in Bintaro, South Jakarta.

Arief explained that the additional spoiler on the helmet is made from material that is easily destroyed when impacted. According to him, it aims to improve driver safety. Because, when the spoiler is destroyed, the object of impact will directly hit the perfectly rounded surface of the helmet.
“There are two points that Arai emphasizes in the production of head safety. Why is it perfectly round? So that it slips easily when hit and follows the direction of the fall. Second, the absorption technique or impact dampening power which is made in layers,” he said.
In the same place, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Arai Indonesia, Eric Saputra, also explained the reasons why his party did not make pointed helmets like its competitors. He conveyed more or less the same thing as Arief RB’s statement.
“Why doesn’t Arai make a helmet that has a pointed shape? For us, the helmet has to be round like an egg. So, if it gets hit, it won’t lock. This is a shape, really round,” explained Eric.
“So, why are the spoilers made to break easily? So if you get hit, it’s better if the spoiler just breaks, then the protection comes from the rounded surface of the helmet. This is what makes the Arai helmet different from Italian helmets,” he added.
