10 Best Chinese Winter Tires for Cars in 2023
Sweden presents a car paradox. The country is not famous for the variety of automobile brands created by the descendants of the Vikings, but their craftsmanship serves as a global standard. Volvo is synonymous with safety, while Koenigsegg is synonymous with speed. That’s probably all. But there was another company that produced outstanding cars – so far from the usual ideology of the automotive industry that it became the world leader in the automotive industry.
Saab is a now-defunct Scandinavian automaker that poured all of its aircraft know-how into producing land vehicles. There was a time when brand cars set trends. Brave Europeans even tried their hand at creating sports cars – and failed.
Saab tried its best to create a car that could become popular around the world. True to Swedish pragmatism, the company’s employees believed that cars should work perfectly. And they built Sonett. In typical Scandinavian stubborn fashion, the company made it to the third generation of the model before finally abandoning the idea.
The first Sonett was introduced in the spring of 1956. The automaker built it for two years, then took a ten-year break before introducing the Sonett II in 1966. Due to several shortcomings, the car was never a success. In 1970, Sonett III was released. This was the last generation of the model. Its production ended in 1974.
The third generation Sonett became the most popular, with 8,368 cars built between 1970 and 1974. This makes it one of the rarest Saab models of all time.
Several details set the Sonett apart from the crowd of 1970s sports cars. Thus, the V4 engine built by Ford of Europe was mounted longitudinally – hence the disproportionately long front end. Another oddity was the lack of a traditional hood. The tiny engine compartment lid provided easy access to the engine. However, a major overhaul required dismantling the entire front end.
One of these rare cars was recently found in a dusty garage. It seemed that it was simply impossible to put it in order. However, after a very thorough wash, this Saab Sonett has regained its former shine.
