The Unique Grave of Vladimír Menšík: Unseen Objects and Special Details at Olšany Cemetery

It was not so long ago that Czech Railways organized “a trip not only for the soul to see the stars of the First Republic”. The goal of the visitors was the cemetery in Prague’s Olšany. Here, those interested could see the final resting place of Svatopluk Beneš, Jindřich Plachta, Saša Rašilov, Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich or Oldřich Nové.

PrahaIN.cz recently wrote about Vladimír Menšík. His family is also buried in Olšany. We knew the tomb only from photographs. Compared to them, the October reality was significantly different. Several items were added that we have never seen on other graves.

We’ll get to those too.

The family tomb of Vladimír Menšík is located literally a few steps from the main entrance. However, it is not in the first row and the inscription is very difficult to read from a distance. It is easy to overlook it.

Although we knew exactly where he was, it was hard work to find him in the section. Thanks to the characteristic shape, we finally succeeded.

We have not seen similar objects elsewhere

The first thing that caught our attention was a hanger with the letters H and I. Hanging from it was a purple ribbon. How it got here, the cemetery manager didn’t know. That certainly wasn’t all. Little angels were hung on and around the tomb. Even those will be noticed by an attentive visitor.

Just like the hanging bunny in the yellow skirt.

The grave was cleaned and there were some fresh flowers on it.

We were also surprised by another detail. The grave was strewn with leaflets with the names of some of Menšík’s films. We remember The Girl on the Broom (1971), Partu hic (1976) and The Bachelor.

Nevertheless, the whole thing seemed very intimate and dignified. No trash, butts.

We also went through other places of actors. Nowhere else have we experienced similar “specializations”.

Vladimír Menšík died on May 29, 1988 at the age of fifty-eight.

Jana Hlaváčová, Luděk Munzar, Martin Růžek, František Filipovský, Vlastimil Brodský or Ota Sklenčka were standing by his coffin in Dvořák’s hall.

Characteristic signature. And a rose as a thank you… Photo: PrahaIN.cz
