The Union of Judges in Bulgaria came out with a position on the case with the attacked 18-year-old girl from Stara Zagora. It is in connection with the attacks against the decision of the District Court in Stara Zagora and personally against the reporter of the case – judge Tatyana Gioneva, to release the accused George Nikolaev at liberty.
Part of the position reads:
“The attitude towards the judicial panel of the Stara Zagora District Court and especially towards the judge-rapporteur also represents our community failure:
to the judges – because we have clearly not been effective enough to uphold the values of justice, so that we deserve the trust to be heard calmly; to the political authorities – because they have not implemented sufficiently convincing policies that explain why it is harmful for the court to explain itself outside the case (there are many international standards in this direction); to all of us – because we allowed calls to lynch the judge, the distribution of her personal photos, photos of her house with an indication of the place of residence”.
The Union of Judges also condemns the release of judge Goneva’s personal data and defines it as “dangerous”.
“A district court judge hears all kinds of cases (including murder and serious organized crime activity), so it is immoral for him to be put in a bad light before the parties in all other cases and to be made an easy target for anyone who is disaffected, mentally unstable or a danger to the public, who is ready to cross the border to avoid a heavy sentence,” the union reminds.

The organization is committed to holding professional discussions in all judicial districts by the end of the year to discuss how the court can effectively use its powers to protect victims of violence and whether legislative changes are needed.
