The coach and his wife released a statement in which Berhalter said he learned from the “shameful” incident from his youth. The couple broke up for seven months but then got back together and recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They have four children together.
“In the fall of 1991, I met my soul mate Rosalind. We were drinking at a local bar one night and got into a heated argument. It escalated and I kicked her in the leg. There’s no excuse for the my behavior at the time. It was a shameful moment that I still regret today,” said the 49-year-old coach and former U.S. rep.
Berhalter said the three-decade-old incident was told to US Soccer in December during the World Cup by a person who said he had information that would “destroy” the coach. The US team at the World Cup was eliminated in the round of 16 by the Netherlands.
In connection with the investigation, the American Federation has announced it will review who will lead the national team during the January training camp. He will announce the decision in the coming days.
