The Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (formerly the Unification Church), which was ordered disbanded by the government in October, has deposited up to 10 billion yen to the government as funds in case it becomes necessary to compensate former members for damages. It was learned through interviews with church officials on the 5th that they are making adjustments to do so. Will be announced soon.

Since the church’s assets will be liquidated once the dissolution order is finalized, victims have raised suspicions that the church’s assets may be leaked overseas in advance, and measures to preserve the assets are being discussed in the Diet. Although the cult has not acknowledged the 10 billion yen worth of damage, it appears to be aimed at dispelling concerns and avoiding new property restrictions imposed by the government.

The Nationwide Unification Church Damage Countermeasures Lawyers’ Team is aware of approximately 130 victims, and estimates the amount of damage to be over 4 billion yen. They have already announced that they have asked the cult to pay compensation of approximately 3.9 billion yen for 124 of them, and if potential damages are included, the amount could be around 100 billion yen. According to an investigation by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the amount of damage revealed at the time of the request for the dissolution order was approximately 1,550 people, including lawsuit settlements and non-litigation settlements, for a total of approximately 20.4 billion yen.
