The Unfortunate Summer of Gull-Erik Bergflødt

HEART LOSER OF THE YEAR? Gull-Erik Bergflødt has had maximum bad luck with the weather this summer. Here from the Festerålen festival in Sortland last August. Photo: Private

– Throughout June we sat in the north and looked at the sun in the south, then we went down…

– We’ve had a couple of usable days in Southern Norway, but otherwise it’s been absolutely terrible, says Gull-ErikGull-Erik from Blackland, that’s his name from birth, Gull-Erik can tell. There are fewer than four people with that name in Norway, according to Statistics Norway. According to Gull-Erik, he is the only one. Bergflødt to VG about the “summer” holiday in the south.

When the sun peeked out in the north, it started to rain in the south.

In July, Oslo had a whopping 61 per cent mer rain than normal. Tromsø, on the other hand, has had 77 per cent less rain, according to the meteorologists.

Provocatively beautiful

– There have been a lot of nice pictures from the north, says Gull-ErikGull-ErikThe name Gull is known for boys back to the 18th century and girls from the late 19th century. Rock flood.

He is still in the south, specifically Oslo, visiting family.

At home in Vesterålen, it has looked like this for the past week:

At the same time that Bergflødt appreciates the time spent with her grandchildren and family in Oslo, she does not miss the summer.

Because while the northerners have been swimming, basking in the midday sun and documenting the terrible weather, Bergflødt has been sitting inside and watching the shitty weather.

– It would have been nice to be able to go in shorts, a T-shirt and wear an outdoor skirt. Now we have to go outside with an awning so as not to get wet, says Bergflødt.

– It has been extremely bad luck, he says.

NOT FROM THIS SUMMER: – Do you have a picture of yourself from this summer that we can use? – No you, I haven’t taken any particular photos this summer. Taking pictures of the rain is not very motivating. Photo: Private

When Bergflødt, who is a keen fisherman, was going for a walk with his rod, he encountered a river that had flooded. Dirt ouch.

– We have gone to town for a few days so as not to get completely homesick, but it has mostly been sitting at home. You get a little weather sick, says Bergflødt.

On 7 August, the Sortland man goes home again.

– I can promise those in the south that the weather will be good, because then we will head north again.

– Do you always have such bad luck with the weather?

– No, this year has been completely bad, but when you live in the north, a more than fine autumn has saved the summer.

The good weather in the north turns – when Gull-Erik comes home

Unfortunately, there are many indications that bad weather will accompany Bergflødt – also on the journey north.

– If you are going to travel north, you almost have to hurry, says on-duty meteorologist Lars Andreas Selberg.

Because from Thursday the weather will turn, and there will be precipitation in central and northern Norway as well.

Nor are the prospects very good in Eastern Norway, say the meteorologists.

– The unstable weather will continue. Tomorrow looks good in Oslo with a lot of sun. Then we get to Saturday night and it rains. This also applies in the West, says Selberg and adds:

– Next week there will be low pressure, on low pressure that will come in and settle over southern Norway.

A little dose of summer

But before the stormy weather near Central and Northern Norway, they get a last little dose of summer.

– In Trondheim, things look promising until Wednesday. Further north it also looks very good. In Bodø the weather will be nice until Wednesday with a good deal of sun, and in Tromsø there will also be a lot of good weather until Tuesday, says Selberg.

The northerners have had their fill of bad weather, but they are also bothered by “fly invasion” – see video:
