The Unforgettable Year: New York City’s Journey Through the Covid-19 Pandemic

Everything looked like any other March in New York City.

The city was preparing for the Saint Patrick’s parade, and in the midst of all this international news of a strange virus began to impact us directly, causing panic and uncertainty.

It was the most terrifying news… Then-Governor Andrew Cuomo declared New York in a state of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Suddenly, the capital of the world became a ghost town.

Businesses, schools and even government institutions closed and began to adapt to remote work.

And TV stations were no exception, we all went home.

But the information didn’t stop, and neither did NY1 News.

Presenter Patsi Arias.

We were the first network in the city to start broadcasting 100% remotely.

Every day, my colleagues and I were challenged to deliver the news without fail to our viewers who needed it now more than ever.

And it is that thousands of people lost their lives due to Covid-19. The city’s hospitals could not cope.

Meanwhile, Queens County became the epicenter of Covid-19.

Statistics indicate that by 2020 more than 30 percent of fatalities from Covid-19 had been Latino or Hispanic.

And so, the race began for a vaccine against the virus.

Entire families remained in their isolated homes to avoid contagion. Some couldn’t even say a last goodbye to their loved ones…

Others were simply buried in mass graves as their bodies were never claimed.

Capacity limitations in public spaces and shortages of respirators, masks and sanitizers became common…

However, within that silence… Every afternoon collective applause arose from the community in honor of essential workers.

Meanwhile, the numbers of daily infections continued to rise, impacting the New York population and leaving thousands of Latinos breathless.

With the arrival of vaccines, the city was able to gradually return to normality.

Just last April of this 2023, the federal authorities officially ended the pandemic.

Meanwhile, we can only remember the more than 40,000 New Yorkers who lost their lives during the pandemic and those affected by the virus who are still struggling to recover.

We here at NY1 news continue to serve our community with the latest information and the most important facts from our unpredictable great New York City.
