Muhammad Ali, considered one of the greatest boxers in history, once again captured global attention following the news that the shorts used in his iconic “Thrilla in Manila” fight against Joe Frazier will be auctioned. This event not only revived Ali’s legacy but also highlighted his lasting impact both inside and outside the ring.
The Sotheby’s auction house in New York will be in charge of carrying out this auction as part of its Sports Week. The shorts, signed by Ali and characterized by being from the Everlast brand, white with black trim, have an estimated price of 6 million dollars, although the current offer is at 3.8 million dollars. Those interested will have until April 12 to participate in the bidding.
The description provided by Sotheby’s highlights the importance of the piece: “Sotheby’s is proud to present for auction the boxing briefs worn by Muhammad Ali in this legendary fight. The white satin briefs have a black trim at the waist and black piping running down the side of each leg. The back is inscribed by Ali’s assistant coach and cornerback, Drew “Bundini” Brown” and signed by Ali in black marker. The inscription on the right leg reads “Ali-Frazier Fight/Trilla in Manila” and the left leg reads “Pres. F. Marcos/Manila, Philippines/October. 1, 1975″.
Ali and Frazier, whose matchups are among the most memorable in sports history, showed the world two contrasting styles: Ali, known for his charisma and technical skill, and Frazier, the image of toughness and endurance. Their first confrontation in 1971 was named the “Fight of the Century,” where Frazier defeated Ali. After a triumphant return in 1974, the stage was set for the third and final showdown between these titans, the Thrilla in Manila in 1975.
The event took place at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines, under intense heat that added drama to the historic fight. For 42 minutes, Ali and Frazier faced each other in a fight that would remain etched in boxing’s collective memory. Despite the physical consequences that both athletes would face after this fight, the “Thrilla in Manila” remains a testament to their boxing legacy.
In addition to Ali’s memorable shorts, Sotheby’s auction will include other items of great historical value, such as the Air Jordan 11 worn by Michael Jordan during Game 5 of the 1996 NBA Finals, which is estimated to be worth up to $400. One thousand dollars.
