At a time when the number of graduates in physics is on the rise again in the United States, the under-representation of black students appears glaringly. The American scientific journal Science conducted the investigation.
While the number of undergraduate graduates in physics almost tripled between 1999 and 2020 in the United States, the share of black students fell from 4.8% to 3.1%, notes the American scientific journal Science, which devotes a file to this subject.
Attract more students
“In the 1990s, American university physics departments faced an existential crisis,” recalls the weekly. “The number of graduates in physics had fallen by 25% in ten years, which raised fears that many departments would disappear or be merged with other programs.”
University physicists have therefore sought to attract more students, by making courses more interactive and updating curricula. The changes had the intended effect, but only on the white student population.
In 2017, the American Institute of Physics therefore set up the national Team-Up task force to improve the representation
