One of the symbols of Dynamo’s championship in the 2020/21 season was Nikolai Shaparenko. Mircea Lucescu moved the player from the position of an attacking midfielder to the holding zone. Here Shaparenko came out on top. He became one of the leaders of Dynamo and began to play consistently for the national team.

An injury last fall erased all of Shaparenko’s previous achievements. The midfielder actually missed last season. Things are not going any better in the new season. At the end of August I received an injury from which I still cannot recover. Sergei Rebrov did not include him in the Ukrainian national team’s application for the matches in October. At a minimum, Shaparenko’s return will have to wait after the window for international matches. There are certain doubts that he will be able to gain at least some form before the end of the first round. All hope is that during the winter training camp Nikolai will be able to gain his playing and physical condition.
Shaparenko is not only the leading player of the team, but also an asset of the club. Among today’s lineup, it could potentially sell for the highest price. Nikolai’s contract with Dynamo is valid until the end of the next season (it is very strange that it ends on September 30, when the transfer window is already closed). At the beginning of November he will be 25 years old. If he does not change the team in the next calendar year, then it will be very difficult to count on a serious career in Europe.
The current season will be decisive for Nikolai. If he even comes close to the form that he had in the 2020/21 season and has the opportunity next summer for a good transfer, or at best we will face a repeat of the fate of Vitaly Buyalsky or, at worst, a “new Garmash” and so on in the long run list.
“Dynamo” also needs to decide. The contract is not that long-term. The situation with Tsygankov should teach us something. If you offer a new one, then this is actually until the player turns 30 years old. There are a lot of risks here.
In my humble opinion, the best time for a transfer was the summer of 2021. Shaparenko played in the Champions League and League of Legends with the national team and reached the quarterfinals of the Euro. Realistically, one could count on 20 million. Now he’s older, suffered a serious injury and can’t get into shape. If nothing changes, then only co-ownership of rights can somehow save the situation.
