The UN warned that the Middle East “is on the brink of an imminent catastrophe” – Diario La Página – 2024-09-26 07:03:00

The UN warned on Sunday that the Middle East “is on the brink of an imminent catastrophe” and stressed that “there is no military solution” to the conflict, amid increasing clashes between Israel and the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah.

“With the region on the brink of imminent catastrophe, it cannot be said loud enough: no military solution will make any of the parties safer,” UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert said in a brief message posted by her office on social media.

Tensions have been rising in recent days, particularly following a wave of coordinated explosions targeting Hezbollah terrorists’ communications devices, which left around 40 people dead and 3,000 injured. Much of the international community, including the UN, has expressed concern about the escalation of tensions.

At least 45 people were also killed in an Israeli airstrike south of the Lebanese capital Beirut on Friday, including Ibrahim Akil, a senior Hezbollah official who was identified by Israel as the target of the airstrike.

Hezbollah responded on Saturday and Sunday by firing dozens of projectiles at Israel, including an attack on Haifa – for the first time since clashes broke out in October 2023 – while Israel has stepped up its bombardment of suspected Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli army announced on Sunday that it is continuing to attack Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, after detecting the launching of some “150 rockets, cruise missiles and drones” towards northern Israel since dawn.

“The army’s attacks will continue and intensify,” the Israeli forces warned in a statement. They also confirmed that most of the launches were intercepted, but that a “small number” of them hit Israeli territory, along with fragments of intercepted missiles.

The Lebanese group backed by the Iranian regime claimed responsibility for the attacks this morning and last night against the Haifa district, some 50 kilometers from the border, which it said targeted an Israeli weapons factory and a military base.

According to an EFE photographer, projectiles hit and caused damage in the cities of Kiryat Bialik, Tsur Shalom and Moreshet, causing fires and damaging several homes without causing any casualties.

At least two people were slightly injured and one is in moderate condition after being hit by shrapnel in the area, the Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) reported.

The escalation of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah has raised fears of the possibility of an expansion of the conflict in the Middle East. In this context, the Israeli army presented its “operational plans” regarding Lebanon to the United States last week.
