UN Secretary-General Antoniu Guterres warned of a new Cold War between the United States and China at the opening of the General Assembly’s annual debate on Tuesday.
“We are moving in a very dangerous direction. Our world cannot afford a future in which the two largest economies divide the world, “said Guteresre.
“The technological and economic divide is inevitably turning into a geostrategic and military divide, and we must avoid it at all costs,” Gutérres emphasized.
He also called for global solidarity in the face of a new coronavirus pandemic, including the development of vaccines.
Guteresre stressed that nationalism in matters related to the vaccine against the new coronavirus is not only unjust, but self-destructive.
Due to the pandemic, the Secretary-General delivered his speech in the almost empty General Assembly hall in New York. Other leaders have pre-recorded their speeches.
