An Argentine telemamography social enterprise that has already reached more than 350,000 low-income women, was recognized by the UN and in November it will be presented at the headquarters of that organization in Switzerland as “innovative solutions to improve health systems”organizers reported.
The venture, called Mamotest, was born in 2013 to bring the mammography service to women living in vulnerable areas and today it has “more than 300 doctors who study mammograms over the Internet and send the results to patients in less than 24 hours,” the project organizers indicated.
“70% of women in the region do not have access to basic health services. To solve this we work with technology, since radiological images are analyzed remotely by the most prestigious medical specialists in the country.”, He explained Guillermo Pepe, founder of Mamotest.
Pepe commented thate a study that used to take six months today is delivered “in less than 24 hours” and “with the same quality as that of a hospital in New York or Paris”.
“We are working on a platform that allows doctors to consult with peers from anywhere in the world and make more and more effective diagnoses. Also we are developing an artificial intelligence algorithm for the platform to tell them if they should pay attention to any particular area or mutation detected in the images“commented the director.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) breast cancer is the most common type of cancer globally. It is also the main cause of mortality in women and was responsible for around 685,000 deaths in 2020.
In Argentina, official statistics indicate that breast cancer is responsible for the death of 6,500 women each year, which places it in fourth place in mortality in Latin America.
