UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the Russia-Ukraine conflict could escalate into a nuclear war.
“The prospect of a nuclear conflict that was once unthinkable is now one of the possibilities,” he told the New York Security Council, according to The Brussels Times.
Guterres called for talks, stressing the suffering of the civilian population caused by Russian forces.
“It is time to stop the horror that has befallen the people of Ukraine and to embark on the path of diplomacy and peace,” he said.
The UN has blamed Russia for the destruction of Ukrainian cities as a result of the Russian bombing.
Announcing the release of $ 40 million from UN emergency funds, Guterres confirmed that the UN and humanitarian partners are working to ensure safe passage from the affected areas in Ukraine.
However, he opposed calls for a no-fly zone over Ukraine, fearing it could escalate the crisis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had earlier called for a no-fly zone over Ukraine, but NATO rejected his requests due to fears of a global conflict.
