The UN General Assembly adopted an overwhelming majority on Wednesday condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and calling on Russia to withdraw its troops immediately.

After more than two days of debate, 141 of the 193 member states, including Latvia, have supported such a resolution. 35 countries abstained, including China. Another 12 Member States did not vote and only five – Russia, Belarus, Eritrea, North Korea and Syria – voted against.

The document expresses the international community’s strong condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, as well as Belarus’s involvement and support in the use of illegal force. The resolution calls for an immediate end to military activities in Ukraine and the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

It reaffirms its strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and draws attention to the worrying humanitarian situation and the need to provide immediate support to Ukrainian refugees.

The non-binding resolution was adopted at an extraordinary session of the UN General Assembly because it could not be adopted by the UN Security Council, in which Russia has a veto.

Latvia strongly condemned Russia’s aggression and brutal attack on Ukraine, which was supported by the Belarussian regime.

Latvia calls for an immediate cessation of Russian military action and the withdrawal of all Russian military forces from Ukraine.
