The UN Human Rights Council has examined the human rights situation in France with the procedure it regularly applies to all member countries. Attacks on migrants, racial profiling, police violence… SIA reports that on May 1, France again became the target of criticism by the UN, which investigates the situation of human rights. After the Human Rights Council discussed the human rights situation in France, many countries, including the United States and Tunisia, called on France to strengthen its efforts to combat violence and racial discrimination.
“We recommend that France strengthen its efforts to combat anti-Semitism and hate crimes and threats of violence against Muslims,” US Representative Kelly Billingsley said.
Racism is on the rise in France. The representative of China in the organization called on France to stop measures that violate the rights of migrants and pointed out that racism and xenophobia are increasing in the country. Representatives of Brazil and Japan have criticized racial profiling by security forces and urged French authorities to take measures to guarantee impartial investigations in South Africa. Even Russia, Venezuela and Iran, three countries regularly condemned by the UN and NGOs for serious human rights violations, have criticized police violence in France in particular.
