The UN accuses Russia of widespread human rights abuses in Crimea

The UN has accused Russia of widespread human rights abuses in the 2014 Crimea.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FDD) has tortured at least six people, according to a UN report released on Thursday.

Russia, as an occupying power, should not facilitate the relocation of Russians to the occupied territory, the report said. According to official Russian statistics, more than 200,000 Russians have moved to Crimea since 2014.

At the same time, almost 50,000 former Crimean residents have registered in Ukraine as refugees.

Kiev has repeatedly accused Moscow of purposefully changing the population of Crimea to consolidate its power.

The report also states that no investigation has been launched into the disappearance of 43 people after annexation, 11 of whom are still missing. At least one person has been abducted and killed.

Russian authorities have also targeted minorities and religious communities, including Crimean Tatars and Jehovah’s Witnesses, through arbitrary arrests and raids, the report said.
