How do I survive the pollen season?
Those who suffer from hay fever are probably already familiar with the pollen calendar. And yes, there you can see that the pollen season is now in full swing. Most trees are in bloom in April and you can notice this from (mild) allergic reactions. In May it is the turn of the grasses, the main cause of hay fever in the Netherlands. And then most herbs — which grow on the road and water sides — have yet to reach their peak period… It’s high time to prepare yourself for hay fever and see what you can do about it.
The best tips against hay fever
First of all, prevention is better than cure. That is why JAN first collected a number of ways to avoid pollen and prevent hay fever complaints:
Prevent hay fever complaints
1/ Shower before going to bed — The Red Cross advises to keep your bedroom pollen-free by rinsing it off in the shower every evening and washing or at least combing your hair. This will remove the pollen and prevent it from sticking to your bed, giving your body time to recover.
2/ On sunny days with a lot of wind, the pollen flies around you. In any case, keep your windows and doors closed on such days, so that you do not suffer from hay fever inside.
3/ Vaseline — Rubbing some petroleum jelly on the inside of your nose and around your eyes will help keep the pollen that causes the allergic reaction from getting into your nose or eyes.
4/ Letting the laundry dry outside is also not a good idea for hay fever sufferers. Your clean laundry is full of pollen unnoticed, which means that you will also suffer from hay fever indoors.
Reducing hay fever complaints
Once you suffer from hay fever symptoms, it is best to (not) do these things:
1/ Don’t rub — no matter how much your eyes itch, rubbing will only make it worse: pollen can also get on your hands and get into your eyes that way. So wash your hands regularly.
2/ Do you wear lenses and do you suffer from hay fever? See if you can wear night lenses. Because you wear it at night, the pollen does not stay between the eye and the lens.
3/ To in the context of JAN’s theme song ‘Love’ kissing is also a way to reduce hay fever symptoms, according to Japanese researchers. They discovered that in hay fever patients, the production of histamine in the body decreases significantly after half an hour of kissing. And let histamine cause sneezing, a runny nose and watery eyes.
4/ Wear sunglasses to prevent pollen from getting into your eyes. It will not solve all complaints, but at least reduce them. These are our favorite sunglasses that could have been from a designer brand.
5/ Last but not least are there medicines such as nasal spray and tablets to reduce your complaints. Ask your doctor which medicines are best for you to take.
