PAPPERT PLAPPERT: How I experienced the game in the stadium as a football newcomer

von THE MORITZ PAPERMAIN-KINZIG CIRCLE – Hardly any other sport is currently more celebrated than American football. The guys from the NFL (actually they’re not guys, but rather animals with their stature) are currently in Frankfurt. The Kansas City Chiefs played there against the Miami Dolphins last Sunday. I watched the game as a football freshman in the stadium.
On the way to the stadium, fans chanted and the atmosphere was exuberant. It was already noticeable here that there are a lot of fans who traveled from America to Frankfurt specifically to support their team. Rather bad for the environment, but it was really good for the mood. When we arrived at the stadium we had chicken wings (26 euros) and beer (7 euros). You don’t need anything more for a successful football day. The game itself got off to an impressive start. After the players arrived with cheers and lots of smoke and ruckus, the flags of the two countries were spread out on the field. Then followed the American and German national anthems. By the way, the German was sung by musician Gregor Hägele. Right at the start of the game the atmosphere was at its peak. The halftime break wasn’t as big of a highlight as the Super Bowl, but at least it was a good change. Although no world star played here, Nico Santos played together with Kontra K. The fans created a much better atmosphere here with Country Roads and Sweet Caroline.
My conclusion: Even as a football newbie, watching a football game live is a unique experience. I had no idea what they were actually doing on the pitch before and I still don’t really know, but in the end it’s all about the atmosphere. The game itself then becomes secondary. And by the way: Unfortunately, Taylor Swift wasn’t there.
