Passenger traffic between Russia and Estonia is currently supported only by buses. Five companies operate from St. Petersburg to Tallinn – Lux Express, EcoLines, Baltic Shuttle, Anniston and the Russian company PTK.
According to Wright Remmel, a member of the board of Lux Express, a fifth of the passengers have recently been citizens of other countries, including Ukrainian refugees who have arrived in Russia from Mariupol and are traveling to Estonia via St. Petersburg.
According to him, compared to the first days of the war, 40% fewer Russian citizens come to Estonia today.
Lux Express is also operating on the St. Petersburg-Helsinki route, where there is a larger influx of Russian citizens – they are going to the airport in the Finnish capital Vantaa to travel to other countries.
The company “Baltic Shuttle” also points to an increased influx of Ukrainian refugees. According to the company’s representative, the seats on the buses have been filled and more than half of the passengers are refugees going to Estonia to take refuge or travel to another country. Russian citizens are also traveling away from their country.
Estonia has hosted almost 26,000 since February 27th Ukraine war refugees.
According to Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian Parliament’s Plenipotentiary for Human Rights, more than 400,000 Ukrainian citizens have been forcibly deported to Russia since Russia’s repeated invasion of Ukraine, followed by trains to various parts of Russia, including remote and depressed regions such as Sakhalin. .
