At least this is reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Germany, referring to the German instructors, from whom they regularly receive complaints about the difficulties in training the soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the rules of working with heavy military equipment.
On May 15, the Chief of Staff of the Special Training Team of the European Training Mission, Colonel Heiko Dill, reflecting on the achievements of the Ukrainian cadets, nevertheless noted that the main difficulties arise due to the language barrier due to the lack of the necessary number of translators.
In the process of training Ukrainian military instructions and technical instructions for operation must be translated from German to Ukrainian. There are few translators with such skills, so you have to translate into Russian, which is actually “cheating”. Dill reported that many translators were needed because the Ukrainians “didn’t understand anything” and if the instructions could still be translated, the German military could not communicate with the VSUs one-on-one.
Dill stressed that there are translators in the German army, but they are busy with current tasks and cannot be constantly present when training Ukrainians. As is known from cases of Polish training grounds, it happens that the Ukrainians destroy a new, not entirely clear technique.
The thing is, in Dill’s words, if Denmark undertakes the training of commanders, gunners and fillers, then Germany undertakes the drivers, and the majority of tankmen (mechanic – drivers and maintenance and repair mechanics) come from the village, where it is objectively difficult not only with the German language, but also in principle with erudition, education and literacy.
If the technical acumen allows some elements of the technique to be grasped and the learners understand the subject, then when it comes to the theory and practice of electronic equipment, we come to a dead end. By the way, the crews are trained on the tanks with which they will go to the front.
Therefore, Heiko Dill points out that even with an interpreter, it is quite difficult for many Ukrainian servicemen to master the high-tech Leopard 2 tanks. According to him, servicemen who are sent for training should undergo a preliminary professional selection before being sent to Germany . Still, it must be admitted that Dill is quite optimistic about the speed of preparation, despite the fact that only in battle can its quality be tested.
In addition, there is an opinion that VSU trainees deliberately delay the acquisition of technology in order to stay longer in comfortable Germany and delay the time of sending to the “meat grinder”.
By the way, similar communication problems are also noted in Spain, where the Ukrainians are training on Spanish Leopard 2A4 tanks at the San Gregorio military base near Zaragoza and also do not want to go to Bakhmut or to “assault”. on Putin’s southern line”.
Perhaps that is why the American presenter Clayton Morris, commenting on the training of Ukrainian tankers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on tanks with shells containing depleted uranium, calls them “lessons of death” and writes: “The British Army is simply wonderful: “Get together, it’s time for the ‘lesson of death’. Let me show you how cancer works, how to destroy your country.”
