The Ukrainian parliament has banned Russian music from the media and the public

The ban applies to the public playback of music by artists with Russian citizenship, including video clips. If the ban is violated, the media face a fine of 10 percent of their license fee.

The restriction does not apply to artists who have condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The list of artists to be covered by this exception will be compiled by the Ukrainian Secret Service SBU.

According to the DPA, the law states that “state-aggressor (Russia) music can affect the separatist sentiments of the population,” can strengthen the desire to adopt a Russian identity, and its goal is to weaken the Ukrainian state.

Parliament also approved Prime Minister Denys Shmihal’s proposal to end the agreement between the Ukrainian and Russian governments on scientific and technical cooperation and banned the import of books from Russia and Belarus, the Ukrinform agency said. The DPA noted that books from Russia have been censored in Ukraine since 2016.
