The Ukrainian men’s volleyball team played its fifth match of the Olympic qualifying tournament. In Brazilian Rio de Janeiro, Ugis Krastins’ team met with the Qatar team.
Our volleyball players started the match with exactly the same lineup that entered the court from the first minutes in the three previous matches. As before, team captain Oleg Plotnitsky remained on the bench. The Qatar volleyball players started the opening game better, leading 5:1, 7:4, 10:7, 14:11. But after the Ukrainians leveled the situation 14:14, the opponents did not let each other go by more than one point. And the denouement came at the very end, when from the score 20:21, our volleyball players made it 24:21. So the Ukrainian team won the game 25:22.
In the second set, on the contrary, the Ukrainians went ahead 5:1, but not for long. The Qatar team not only tied the score 6:6, but also went four points ahead at 10:6. Ugis Krastiņš had to use two time-outs at the very beginning of the game in order to somehow stop the playing out of his opponents. To some extent this was successful and the gap stabilized. Only in the middle of the game did the Ukrainians manage to get within two points 13:11, 15:13, but soon Qatar again increased their advantage – 18:14, 19:15. Here our volleyball players, one might say, broke through and they took four points in a row – 19:19. And then the Ukrainians simply missed the victory. Having four (!) set points, they were unable to convert any of them. But Qatar, at the first opportunity, finished the game in their favor 29:27.
And in the third set, our team had to catch up with our opponents for a long time, and the gap reached four or five points. By the way, even at the end of the third game, Oleg Plotnitsky came onto the court instead of Ilya Kovalev and with several successful actions he tried to inspire his partners. It worked and the Ukrainians first managed to equalize the score 17:17, and then take the lead 18:17. This time, from the second set point, our team still won 26:24.
The fourth game was already completely dictated by the Ukrainian team. She took the lead from the start and never allowed her opponents to take the lead. In the middle of the game, the advantage of our volleyball players was large 16:11. And the game ended with a score of 25:21 in our favor.
The Ukrainians played in the following lineup: Vladislav Shchurov (scored 4 points), Vasily Tupchiy (14), Timofey Poluyan (20), Yuri Semenyuk (10), Yuri Sinitsa (2), Ilya Kovalev (4), Alexander Boyko (libero) – starting. Substitutes included: Vitaly Kucher (0), Oleg Plotnitsky (13).
