The Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra wants to defend the cultural heritage of Ukraine. That’s how combative its founder and conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson puts it. The orchestra is now making its first guest appearance at the Lucerne Festival – with a political programme, of course.
She makes guest appearances at major opera houses in Vienna, London and New York, and she founded the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra out of personal dismay: the conductor Keri-Lynn Wilson.

“My baton is my weapon,” says Keri-Lynn Wilson. The Canadian conductor with Ukrainian roots was deeply shocked when Ukraine was attacked by Russia on February 24, 2022 – and she felt powerless in distant New York. She thought of her relatives; one of her cousins had been fighting in the Ukrainian army on the Donbass front since 2014. But the shock didn’t last long. She came up with the idea of forming an orchestra of Ukrainians to raise awareness of the fate of the attacked country in the cultural world as well. The idea quickly took shape.
