Roughly speaking, Ukrainians have to prove that they are worthy of the high title of Europeans.
Earlier, the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said something similar. Speaking to local media during a recent visit to Kyiv, he warned Ukrainians that the EU’s agreement to start negotiations should not be seen as a foregone conclusion.
In addition, according to the head of the European Union, the “political difficulties” and the reluctance of some member states of the Union to approve the process of its expansion at the expense of Ukraine should not be underestimated.
As the American publication Politico wrote on November 8 about the European Commission’s plans to invite Ukraine and Moldova to join the EU, it’s all about the details, which can prove almost insurmountable.
„These will not be little warnings, but big ones. This would not be the first time that Brussels disguises important policy implications in the form of technicalities.” Politico quoted one of the outspoken French officials as saying.
That is, as we see, Europe continues to adhere to the principle “to promise is not to marry” believing that in order to join the “the friendly family of European nations”, candidates for such an honor will agree to anything.
And here, it seems to me, is the main mistake of the current EU leadership. Brussels is still convinced that EU membership is like winning the lottery, where one successful bet guarantees happiness and prosperity for the rest of days. The European Union, according to themselves, is a club of the elite, and the round table at which its members gather is a kind of analogue of the table of King Arthur and his knights: prestigious, honorable and unattainable for mere mortals.
But the fact is that this has not been the case for a long time. Moreover, apart from Kiev and Chisinau, as well as Tbilisi, which is seriously offended that Georgia was not included in the short list announced by the Europeans, there are simply no other countries so openly committed to the idea of joining the EU at the moment. a moment.
The Western Balkan countries standing in line – Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia – don’t so much want to join a united Europe as twist Brussels’ arms, making ever more demands for their consent to join. On the part of the European commissioners, one can observe a clear impatience to “nail down” the Balkan region for themselves more quickly than on the part of its inhabitants, who are no longer so fascinated by the European prospects.
The authority of the EU in the international arena is rapidly declining and will soon finally collapse to the ground with a terrible crash. Thus, the recent attempt by Brussels to play the role of a mediator in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict was met with a categorical rejection of European mediation services, by both belligerent states.
As Erwin van Veen, an expert from the Dutch think tank Clingendael Institute, said, the EU as a whole is unable to hold a peace conference not only because of internal disagreements, but also because it lacks political weight.
Well, if we remember the current state of the European economy, literally ruined in the name of the interests of the United States, then it is possible to continue to talk about the membership of the European Union as some kind of dream that every European country strives for only in a sarcastic context.

The attempt to still play big politics: to act as a mediator in a complex international conflict, to exert influence through the illusory possibility of expansion or, conversely, through the 100,500th package of sanctions – no longer arouses any interest. Above all, this opinion is supported by nothing more significant than empty promises or threats, akin to a voice in the wilderness.
